About Fortune Theatre

We are New Zealand’s southern-most professional theatre, and the only one in Otago and Southland. We are located in the heart of Dunedin city, one block from the Octagon, in the beautiful and historic Trinity Methodist Church building which dates back to 1869. The theatre was established in 1974 at the Athenaeum in the Octagon and moved to its present location in 1978.

The theatre has two auditoriums; our mainstage which seats 227 people and our Murray Hutchinson Studio which seats 102. At present we produce seven mainbill productions a year (one of which tours around venues in Otago and Southland) plus a children’s show in the winter school holidays.  We also host a range of other productions by local, national and international artists throughout the year.

Currently, the theatre has 11 permanent staff members led by a General Manager and Artistic Director, and contracts actors, directors, lighting designers, sound designers, and technical operators as required for each show. Find out more about our staff.  Check out our current vacancies.

Fortune Theatre is a non-profit charitable trust, governed by a voluntary Board of Trustees. We are very grateful to Creative New Zealand, the Otago Community Trust  and the Dunedin City Council for being our major financial supporters. We are also very thankful for support from local business partners, charitable trusts and individual benefactors and ambassadors.  Find out more about our current supporters.

Fortune Theatre is very lucky to have a large group of Fortune Theatre Members who give their time as fundraisers, ushers and front-of-house volunteers. Find out how to become a Fortune Theatre Member.
