Welcome to the 2013 Season
2014 marks Fortune Theatre’s 40th Anniversary. Rubies, which represent the 40-year milestone, are believed to have an eternal inner flame. Fortune Theatre is Dunedin’s gem, that has burned brightly in the heart of the city for the last four decades. It has revived classics, produced works by locally, nationally and internationally renowned playwrights and, most recently, has centralised its focus to introduce audiences to new and exciting voices in contemporary theatre.
The 2014 season, while staying true to our vision, celebrates past, present and beyond.
Nobody can deny the important role Roger Hall has played in Fortune’s history, so it is with great pride we open 2014 with the World Première of his newest play Book Ends. We’re also honoured to produce the Dunedin première of Gary Henderson’s modern classic, Peninsula, which he wrote while he was Robert Lord Writer in Resident in 2004, and we celebrate Christmas with one of the most popular New Zealand plays of our time, Ladies Night.
Three international New Zealand premières include: Souvenir, Jumpy and Lungs, which provide audiences with a diverse range of brand new stories: bold, brilliant and beautiful. We also take you out of the building to a secret off-site location with Harold Pinter’s The Caretaker. If you’re wanting more, the third weekend in July, while Jumpy and our children’s show Cat vs. Dog are running, the theatre will be packed with 40th Anniversary festivities: readings, forums, talks and tours.
We invite you all to join us for this special year and to keep the flame burning brightly for the special gem that is Dunedin’s own, Fortune Theatre - one of New Zealand’s longest running professional theatres.
