Note from Chairman

Chairman

There is something of the ephemeral about theatre – so much work and effort, passion and soul goes into a production that runs for two, maybe three weeks, and then it is gone, and another production commences.

Maybe, however, this is not the case? We celebrated our 40th Anniversary in 2014 and it was a wonderful weekend – significantly for me because I had the opportunity to talk and listen to people that recounted plays from years past, that still had an impact on their lives. That is the beauty of live theatre; it entertains, but also challenges us, the way we think, how we view the world and situations around us.

Theatre, from the Greek Theatron, which roughly translates as “a place to behold”, is a platform to behold the drama, tragedy and comedy that is life. Theatre is so much more than just a good evening out, if we, as the audience, will let it be.

The 40th Anniversary also highlighted for me the special niche Fortune Theatre holds in our community of Dunedin and beyond and the crucial role it plays in the life of arts and culture in Dunedin and in New Zealand. Our 2015 season will provide a Theatron that promises to entertain, challenge and make you think.

As Chairman of the Board for Fortune Theatre I welcome you to join us on that journey, and I thank you dearly for your support.

I especially want to recognise the dedication, heart and soul, and passion of our team of staff and actors, that create the calibre of theatre that Fortune is renowned for.

Welcome to our 2015 season!
