Fostering New Theatrical Talent at the Fortune

The creative team involved in Fortune Theatre’s upcoming kids’ show What You Will exemplify the theatre’s commitment to fostering new theatrical talent. The writer, actors, director and operator have all attended the University of Otago and the show itself is based on characters from the Shakespeare classic Twelfth Night, which will run at the same time as part of the main season and is the result of a collaboration between the theatre and the University.

The genius behind What You Will (besides Shakespeare of course) is local writer, actor and musician Zac Nicholls. Though he has worked for the theatre before as a musician, in kids’ shows The Emperor’s New Clothes and Little Red Riding Hood, this will be the first time his own work is performed at the Fortune. It was through university, and his previous work at the Fortune, that he came to be involved in What You Will. He notes that “the fortune is always keen to help young theatre people in Dunedin thrive”, with initiatives like the 4X4 Emerging Playwrights’ programme, as well as giving artists like himself opportunities to undertake projects. As part of their support for this new work, the theatre has placed Nicholls in contact with script advisor Emily Duncan, who has provided feedback through out the writing process. “She is a genius,” Nicholls says, helping him to think of the story in a narrative sense, getting the world and characters of the play not only funny and engaging but cohesive and well rounded.

Taking the directing helm is Jordan Dickson, who started his professional career directing kids shows for the Fortune whilst he was still at University. His favourite part of directing kids’ shows is the audience, saying “kids come to the theatre ready to have a great time, no questions asked.” What You Will has been a particularly unique experience because of the playwright’s involvement in not only the writing of the play but also the rehearsals and staging. Dickson says, “it’s so fantastic working with a playwright in the room. We’ve been able to develop the script even further working alongside Zac; the show just gets better each and every day!”

Joining Nicholls and Dickson are actors Nick Tipa as Feste, Sam Shannon as Maria and Shaun Swain as Malvolio. Completing the team is Anna Vandenbosch as the stage manager and the light operator. All four have passed through the University of Otago at some point and this shared background makes for a close knit team. Dickson says that the group has a “great working vocabulary” that springs from their shared experiences at Otago.

“Relaxing the Rules” in the School Holidays at The Fortune Theatre

The one week season of What You Will, running from the 15th to the 22nd of July, will include a relaxed performance on the 17th. An initiative launched earlier in 2017, the relaxed performance opens up the theatre to children and their families who might find it difficult to attend regular shows. A number of steps are taken to make the theatre environment more hospitable for people on the autism spectrum, with sensory and communication disorders, or other sensitivity issues. The theatre’s education department also put together a Social Script that outlines the process of going to the theatre, letting people know what to expect, as well as introducing the actors and their characters, and answering common questions. “We thoroughly enjoyed our relaxed performance of Little Red Riding Hood last school holidays and we’re looking forward to another fun and welcoming show this time around,” Fortune Education Liaison Shannon Colbert says, and mentions that anyone wishing for a copy can email her or come to the theatre and pick one up.

Whether it is those creating the performance, or being welcomed in to experience the performance, all aspects of What You Will highlight the Fortune Theatre’s work in bringing new voices and viewpoints into the theatre space. Filled with music, mischief and massive amounts of chocolate – thanks to Cadbury and their Chocolate Carnival – this show is going to be a school holiday highlight for their entire family!

Successful Collaboration Between The Fortune and University of Otago

The Fortune Theatre’s production of Twelfth Night has been able to come to fruition thanks to the exciting collaboration with the University of Otago and the Fortune. This sees eleven Theatre Studies students taking on a number of intern roles within the production: assistant director, stage manager, 2 set designers, 3 actors, theatre management, wardrobe, lighting and education.

The partnership between the Fortune Theatre and the University began in 2015 with a collaboration formed around the play Punk Rock. Following the success of that production, it was decided the programme would run again in 2017, this time revolving around the Shakespeare classic Twelfth Night.

The students have been working on the show in their various capacities since February. For Beth Waite, Stage Management intern, working on the production has been an extension of work she has done for past university papers, noting how the Theatre Technology paper had provided her with a good base for the role. For her, this really cements what young theatre makers learn as they grow up: that there are so many more facets to the theatre than just acting. There are so many ways to get involved in what she describes as “this weird and wonderful, crazy world” and this collaboration has allowed many of the interns to get a taste of what those are.

Kate Johnstone, Orion Carey-Clark and Shaun Swain are the student actors joining the professional company. A highlight for them has been working through such a “positive, funny, energetic process” with an amazing team of actors; to quote Kate, there is “some serious skill in that room”. Working with Ben Henson, Twelfth Night’s Director, has been a huge part of their experience. He is a director who is “in the world with you”, one hundred percent invested in the play and in the actors. His preparation and dedication to mining the details of the play has taught the actors so much about the work that goes into staging a production, with Shaun noting that it sets a “personal bar to strive for”.

Intern Sam Farr has been involved with the Fortune’s Education Programme, helping to put together education packs to make the show experience “dynamic and engaging” for the large number of high schools that will view the show as part of their school curriculum. Sam has found it very rewarding to work in a professional environment where his input has been considered and valued.

The collaboration between the Fortune Theatre and the University of Otago has provided the students with a way to gain work experience in the industry, learning hands-on that can only come from being alive and in the moment. They have been given a taste of just how much there is to learn, but have also gained the confidence to go out and learn those things.

‘Backstage Pass’ Bringing Theatre to the Classroom

Backstage Pass at the Fortune Theatre DunedinDrama students can now enjoy a ‘digital look’ behind the scenes at Fortune Theatre productions thanks to a new initiative backed by a GigCity grant with thanks to Chorus.

Fortune Theatre’s ‘Backstage Pass’ uses video conferencing to let students observe and interact with the production process. It ran successfully for the first time last year with the play ‘Grounded’ and earlier in June this year, it was able to bring Shakespeare to the classrooms of John McGlashan College and Otago Girls’ High School in Dunedin and St Peter’s College in Gore. These pupils watched a live rehearsal of a Twelfth Night. More sessions are scheduled for other schools around Otago and Southland.

On Wednesday 21 June, TVNZ visited our Backstage Pass in action during a rehearsal of Twelfth Night with Wakatipu and Otago Girls High Schools live streaming in. They also had a cameraman at Wakatipu to catch the action from the students’ perspective. Their news article should be on TV one this weekend – keep an eye out for this.

If you are a teacher and would like to know how to bring live theatre to your classroom please email Shannon, Education Liaison

Inspiring Director for Twelfth Night

Benjamin Henson originally hails from Leicester, England and trained in Theatre Direction at the Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts, London, while directing productions for the London Fringe and cabaret circuit. Having directed in Germany and France, as well as nine consecutive years at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, Ben decided a move to New Zealand was the next challenge.

Under theatre collective Fractious Tash, Ben has received critical acclaim for Earnest, Not Psycho and Titus, the latter remounted for a sell-out season at the Pop-Up Globe 2016. Last year Benjamin was one of two directors engaging in The Engine Room – a fast-tracking initiative between Auckland Theatre Company, New Zealand Opera and The Fortune Theatre.

In 2017, Ben has already directed the Auckland University Summer Shakespeare, As You Like It, and is currently in production for Twelfth Night here at The Fortune Theatre. He caps off his year with The Effect with theatre collective Fractious Tash in August.
