‘Backstage Pass’ Bringing Theatre to the Classroom

Backstage Pass at the Fortune Theatre DunedinDrama students can now enjoy a ‘digital look’ behind the scenes at Fortune Theatre productions thanks to a new initiative backed by a GigCity grant with thanks to Chorus.

Fortune Theatre’s ‘Backstage Pass’ uses video conferencing to let students observe and interact with the production process. It ran successfully for the first time last year with the play ‘Grounded’ and earlier in June this year, it was able to bring Shakespeare to the classrooms of John McGlashan College and Otago Girls’ High School in Dunedin and St Peter’s College in Gore. These pupils watched a live rehearsal of a Twelfth Night. More sessions are scheduled for other schools around Otago and Southland.

On Wednesday 21 June, TVNZ visited our Backstage Pass in action during a rehearsal of Twelfth Night with Wakatipu and Otago Girls High Schools live streaming in. They also had a cameraman at Wakatipu to catch the action from the students’ perspective. Their news article should be on TV one this weekend – keep an eye out for this.
