Fortune Theatre is an excellent place for young people to learn and explore theatre. We provide a range of options for schools as EOTC experiences. Come and participate in a forum night and talk with the cast and crew after seeing the show, take a tour around the theatre, book a workshop, become a Fortune Gateway student or join our School Ambassador Programme. We offer show specific education resources designed to support NCEA requirements and a number of experiences that link to a range of subjects within the New Zealand Curriculum. Enquiries are always welcome.

Backstage Pass – Bringing Theatre to the Classroom

Backstage Pass allows high school students from around the region to stream in live from classroom to theatre to observe all the work that goes on behind the scenes as we create a production. They will be able to watch actors, director, designers and crew at work and have a chance to talk with them about what goes into creating a play. Students will get real insight into the production process before coming to Fortune to see the show in person.

Backstage pass will support shows of particular interest to highs school students. In 2017 these are Twelfth night and Into the Woods. Please contact us for more information about joining the programme.

Education resources

Most plays are supported by a School Resource Pack. These have a wealth of information about the production and are designed to support students studying our plays for their NCEA requirements. We currently have resources for Peninsula, Jumpy, Lungs, The Caretaker, Outside Mullingar, The War Play, Punk Rock, The Hound of the Baskervilles, Time Stands Still and Winston’s Birthday.

Forums with Cast & Crew

Forums provide a wonderful opportunity to talk with the cast and crew of each production. They are held on the first Tuesday evening of the season at 6pm and are very popular with school groups. So popular, in fact, that we often schedule a 2nd or 3rd forum night, so do ask about extra forum nights. Students are able to ask questions and discuss everything from set, lighting, sound and costume design to acting choices, themes, and director’s vision. Please contact us to book in for one of our forum nights which are open to the public as well as school groups.

Ambassador Programme

Fortune School Ambassadors are selected from local high schools to come to the theatre to meet and observe theatre professionals at work. They will have the opportunity to get inside the rehearsal room to see the rehearsal process in action and talk with the actors, directors and stage managers, along with interviewing costume, set, sound and lighting designers to develop a good understanding of the process of creating a professional theatre production and what a career in theatre could look like. The Ambassadors also get to join us for opening night with complementary tickets to the performance. Fortune School Ambassadors are responsible for sharing their experiences at the theatre with their fellow students and community, writing reviews, talking about the shows on Otago Access Radio and promoting theatre at their schools. Please contact us for more information.

Tours and workshops

Please contact us to create a personalised visit to the theatre with tours and workshops suited to the age and interests of your students.
