Note From Backstage
By Lara Macgregor
Artistic Director
Greetings all,
It was a risk to programme a play like In the Next Room or the vibrator play, but there is no denying what a spectacular writer Sarah Ruhl is and what a remarkable job the cast did bringing her words to life. Thank you for the slew of complementary e-mails and contributing in making this production such a success.
Heroes is about to begin rehearsals this coming week. How wonderful to have the talents of Peter Hayden, Geoffrey Heath and Simon O’Connor joining us. I have been in love with Heroes for a long time. The play originated in France and was translated into English by Tom Stoppard. It is funny, delicate, and moving tribute to the military servicemen of World War I.
There are no longer any living veterans from that war but last week I was privileged to meet four men that served in World War II at Monticello Veteran’s Home here in Dunedin.
Duncan, Jack, Ken and Bill kindly shared their stories, memories, photos and laughter with Larissa Dyke, our new marketing manager, Miguel Nitis and myself. Miguel is currently editing together footage he recorded that day and creating our video trailer for Heroes. This will be posted on the Fortune Theatre website, Facebook page and the ODT website over the next week – I sincerely hope you have the opportunity to see it and the show.
Take a good look at the diary for this month. There is much going on. Hard to believe we are over half way through the year. Your patronage has been outstanding – our continued thanks go to you for your on-going enthusiasm and support.
